Where is the master cylinder on a car?

04-28,2025

The master cylinder is an important part of an automotive braking system. It serves the main purpose of converting the force exerted by the driver on the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure that drives the brake cylinders of each wheel to achieve braking. It is typically located in the engine compartment, connecting the brake pedal and brake lines. The brake master cylinder is usually located in the front part of the engine compartment, adjacent to the brake booster, and behind the brake pedal.

Common failures of a master cylinder:

1. Leakage of braking fluid

A damaged sealing ring can cause brake fluid leakage and affect braking performance.

2. Braking failure

If the piston inside the master cylinder is stuck, or if the brake fluid leaks seriously, the braking performance may degrade.

3. Longer travel of the brake pedal

An aged or damaged internal seal of the master cylinder can lead to insufficient liquid pressure, and result in a significant longer travel of the brake pedal for achieving desired braking effect. In other words, greater force is needed for braking operation.

4. Abnormal sound of the braking system

If the cylinder is worn, or if foreign objects enter the cylinder, friction between mechanical components may occur, leading to abnormal noise when the brake pedal is pressed.

5. The brake alarm indicator is on

If the system detects a low brake fluid level or a brake system malfunction, the brake alarm indicator on the dashboard will remain on.

Notes for maintenance of a master cylinder:

Replace the brake fluid regularly

It is recommended that the brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years or 40000 kilometers to avoid a decrease in boiling point and corrosion due to moisture absorption.

Examine sealing effect

Observe the liquid level of the liquid storage tank and check if there is any leakage in the pipeline.
