What is the purpose of an automotive intercooler?

06-30,2025

Automotive intercooler is a critical part in a turbocharged or supercharged engine system. Its main purpose is decreasing the temperature of hot air after turbocharging to lower the thermal load of the engine and increase the air inflow volume, thus increasing the engine's power.

Functions of an intercooler:

Increase air density: Cooled air has a higher density than hot air, which means more air can be drawn in during the same engine stroke to improve combustion efficiency.

Increase engine power: More air means more oxygen is available for combustion, which results in more complete combustion of fuel and greater engine output.

Improve fuel efficiency: Fuel combustion is more complete, which can reduce fuel consumption under the same power.

Lower engine temperature: Cold air entering the cylinders helps lower the general engine temperature, thus reducing the risk of overheating and extending the service life of the engine.

Reduce the risk of knocking: Lower air intake temperature reduces the possibility of knocking, especially for engines with a high compression ratio.
