Symptoms of a broken steering gear:

1. If the steering wheel requires different amount of force when operated in opposite directions, the steering gear may have certain problem, which is typically caused by mis-adjustment of the limit valve;

2. If the vehicle fails to run in a straight direction or deviates from straight paths, the symptom may be caused by dynamic balance function of tyres or a failed steering gear;

3. If abnormal sound is heard from the steering column during turns, there may be a lack of power steering oil for the steering gear.

Is it necessary to replace a steering gear with abnormal sound?

It depends on the actual circumstances. In some cases, the abnormal sound of a steering gear can be solved without replacing the unit. For example, if relevant symptom is caused by a lack of power steering oil, all we need to do is adding some lubricant to the steering gear and checking if the universal joint exhibits any sign of rust or ill lubrication.
