What are the symptoms and inspection methods of automotive ignition coil faults?

06-28,2023

An automotive ignition coil structure mainly consists of primary coil, secondary coil, and core. In the ignition system, the ignition coil transforms low voltage into high voltage, thus generating electric spark at the spark plug. The failure rate of an engine ignition system is typically high.

Symptoms of ignition coil faults:

1. Engine vibration: Once the ignition coil is damaged, the spark plug is not able to penetrate and ignite the combustible gas mixture, and it is very likely to cause misfiring, thus resulting in severe vibration. If misfiring occurs in multiple cylinders or in two adjacent working cylinders, the possibility of failed engine start is quite large.

2. Increased fuel consumption and lower power: Even if the damage ignition does not cause engine misfiring, it will still affect combustion of the gas mixture in the engine due to the weaker ignition ability of the spark plug, and lead to adverse consequences such as increased fuel consumption and lower power.

3. A large amount of carbon deposition: If the spark plug’s ignition ability becomes weaker, it will result in incomplete combustion of the gas mixture, which will in turn give birth to a coking substance called carbon deposition, and cause the car to emit black exhaust.

Inspection methods of automotive ignition coil:

There are two common methods for examining ignition coil failures: visual inspection and examination with a multimeter.

(1) Visual inspection: The main items to be examined include dirty or broken insulation cover of the ignition coil and loose or rusty wiring terminal. In the case of dirt or rust, clean the parts in question before conducting another inspection. If the insulation cover is broken, the ignition coil should be replaced.

(2) Examination with a multimeter: The resistance of the primary coil and the secondary coil should be typically measured. If the resistance deviates from the specified standard range, the ignition coil is faulty and should be replaced. Method for measuring the insulation resistance: Using the resistance range of the multimeter, measure the resistance between (any) wiring terminal of the ignition coil and the enclosure. The measurement should be not lower than 50 MΩ.

vika electronic ignition coils

Advantages of vika electronic ignition coils:

1. Long service life: The integrated magnetic sleeve prevents detachment, leading to a service life of vika electronic ignition coils at least 240 hours.

2. Reasonable structure: The low-voltage head and coil are closely matched with a reasonable structure.

3. Resistance to high temperature: The world's most renowned Elektrisola enameled wire brand is adopted, together with PPE imported from Japan, vika electronic ignition coils ensure excellent resistance to electricity and high temperature.

4. Good insulation: Kyocera epoxy resin from Japan provides good permeability and high insulation, and avoids ignition failure due to resin cracking.
