What are possible causes of failures of an EGR valve?

01-13,2025

EGR valve is also known as exhaust recirculation valve. It is an important part of the engine system in a car. It serves the main purpose of reintroducing a portion of the exhaust into the intake manifold to reduce pollution caused by engine emissions, especially nitrogen oxides. The failures of an EGR valve can affect the performance and emissions of the engine. The following are some common causes of failures of an EGR valve:

1. Carbon deposition

Cause: The carbon particles generated during engine combustion can deposit in the EGR valve and its pipes.

Impact: The carbon deposition can restrict or completely block the valve, and prevent normal exhaust flow.

2. Coolant leakage

Cause: If there is leakage in the cooling system, coolant may enter the EGR valve.

Impact: Such leakage may cause corrosion or damage to the valve, preventing it from functioning properly.

3. Overheating

Cause: Operation at high temperatures for long can cause degradation of the EGR valve material.

Impact: The valve may deform, and its sealing and operation performance may be affected.

4. Electrical malfunction

Cause: There are problems with the electrical connection or control module of the EGR valve, such as open circuit or short circuit.

Impact: The valve is unable to open or close normally as instructed.

5. Engine operating conditions

Cause: Engine components have worn, or there is incomplete combustion, or low-quality fuel has been used.

Impact: Increased emissions make the EGR valve more prone to carbon deposition.

6. Sensor malfunction

Cause: Sensors related to the EGR system, such as pressure sensor and location sensor, have failed.

Impact: The ECU is unable to receive accurate information, and control of the EGR valve is impacted.

7. Temperature problems

Cause: The engine temperature sensor has failed, causing the valve to open or close prematurely in the course of cold start.

Impact: It may cause engine instability or higher emissions.

8. Aging of valve material

Cause: The material ages after long operation, especially in hot environments.

Impact: The valve may experience unsmooth opening and closing or poor sealing.

vika STO EGR valve

Advantages of vika STO EGR valve:

The clapboard of vika STO EGR valve is made of 304 stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion and rust.

The vika STO EGR valve body is made of 304 stainless steel. It features higher strength thanks to a press fitting assembly method and a welding process.

The aluminum parts of vika STO EGR valve are treated by means of hard anodizing, which leads to excellent corrosion and rust resistance and greater durability.
