Commons failures of camshaft and possible causes

10-23,2024

Camshaft is an important part of internal combustion engine. Its common failures may seriously impair the performance and efficiency of engine. Some common malfunctions of camshaft and their possible causes are listed below:

Wear:
Improper lubrication, use of inferior oil, accumulation of oil sludge, or long-term operation under high load can cause wear on the contact surface of a camshaft, and consequently affect accurate control of valve opening and closing time.

Deformation or crack:
Excessive thermal stress, mechanical stress, or manufacturing defects may lead to deformation or cracking of a camshaft, especially in high-temperature and high-pressure operation environments.

Connection failure:
Connection failure between a camshaft and other components such as sprocket or gear may result from wear, looseness, or mechanical malfunction.

Loss of balance:
Uneven wear, material defect, or improper installation may cause a camshaft to lose balance and vibrate during rotation.

Oil seal damage;
An aged or heavily worn oil seal may lead to oil leakage, prevent proper lubrication, and increase wear.

Improper valve opening:
An improperly positioned, worn, or damaged camshaft can result in incorrect valve opening and closing time, thus affecting the engine's air intake and exhaust performance and impairing power output and fuel economy.

Abnormal sound:
If a knocking or friction sound is heard, it may be caused by poor lubrication, wear, or loose components.

vika camshafts for Mercedes Benz series

The vika camshafts for Mercedes Benz series use a flange signal disc. An interference fit technology and a laser welding process are adopted in their production to minimize their endplay.
