What are possible reasons for delayed start of an electronic fan?

The electronic fan on a car will start running once the radiator becomes too hot. A failed fan or a delayed start of the fan may result from the following factors:

1. Jammed fan
Foreign matters like silt may have penetrated into the space between the blades and the bearing;

2. Failed sensor
The sensor monitors and sends water temperature signals. With a broken sensor, the ECU is unable to detect the water temperature signals and will keep the electronic fan deactivated by default. This failure is typically accompanied by overheat of the engine;

3. Burned relay
Among the many relays on a car, some may get short-circuited and burned due to aged harness;

4. Wrong wiring
Such fault mainly occurs on a car with multiple electronic fans and relays. Following repair of a car, the fan harness may be wrongly connected and prevent normal function of the fan.
